Sleep apnea robs you of rest, wreaks havoc with your glucose levels and is life-threatening if not treated



Wake-Up CallDo you sleep soundly yet feel sleepy during the day? Then you might have sleep apnea, a serious disorder that interrupts breathing repeatedly during sleep. Naresh M. Punjabi, M.D., Ph.D., a sleep disorders expert at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, discusses how to recognize and treat it.

The effects of lost sleep
Daytime drowsiness is not the only consequence of sleep apnea. The loss of oxygen (apnea means "without breath" in Greek) may cause hypertension, cardiovascular disease and stroke. And if you’re not sleeping well, you’re also more likely to suffer from fatigue and depression. Higher rates of accidents at work and on the road are also associated with fatigue.
